Hi all. Our Paternoster trip unfortunately had to be postponed due to circumstances beyond our control, however the good news is that it is all systems go for our Feb trip, and of course the big trip to Struis Baai in March - the accomodation has already been secured and we are taking bookings. See you all there.... |

TECH DIVE: Due primarily to a roll over of course dives, we have had to postpone our planned tech dive to the MFV Afrikaner (53msw). This then has the knock-on effect of putting us firmly in the xmas/new year period, which brings out its own issues. Accordingly, the December tech dive has been postponed to January. Details to follow closer to the time. |

SANDY POINT TRIP REPORT BACK: We headed up the West Coast early Saturday morning and all signs seemed good that it would be great days diving – there was no wind, the sea was flat and it was warm out. We sped out of Sandy Point harbour and in no time were at the SS HALERIC. The viz looked good and the surface temperature was a balmy 17C – very unusual for the West Coast. On descent the viz however dropped (together with the temperature), and we ended up with a greenish 5-6m viz at the bottom, and a coolish 11C. This however did not dampen our spirits and off we headed for the stern. The rudder has come off its pintles, but is very much intact. It is also huge and quite a site. From there we followed the prop shaft up to the two massive boilers and then onto the bow. Although the bow area is a little flat, one of the divers even saw the one anchor in situ. Even with Nitrox we had limited time and soon had to surface, although what a fantastic dive! For the second dive we chose the MV SEA TRADER, as the viz looked reasonable there. It was much the same as on the Haleric, but as it is a lot shallower, we could really spend a lot of time on the wreck. A part of the cargo was reinforcing rod, and there are still kilometers of the stuff to be seen. The wreckage is also very “industrial” in nature, with lots of piping, flanges, cylinders, motors, valves and other oddly shaped thingies… We did however see two anchors, one even with tens of meters of anchor chain still attached. The wreck was also inundated with fish (together with lots of fishing line), testament to the fact that it is a popular fishing spot, so one needs to be on the look out for points of entanglement. What a great second dive it made though. Thanks for all the divers that made the effort to join us on the West Coast. This coastline is definitely not dived often enough in my opinion, hence we shall be back shortly. Our next trip is planned for Paternoster in January 2010. See you all there. |
