THE HIGHFIELD AND THE CAPE MATAPAN – 26/12/2011
After a lekker xmas break and after having eaten way too much turkey, we decided that we needed a chilly dive in the Atlantic to burn off some calories. The water temperature on the surface did not oblige, however as we passed the 10m mark on the shot, the viz went from 3m to 15m and the temperature dropped to 9C!! We descended on the bow of the Highfields and were met with two HUGE anchors and several smaller ones scattered around the massive bow winch. We then headed down to the stern, passing over the upturned hull, and found what appeared to be two rudders? On the way back to the shot we investigated the large debris field on the port side and saw many interesting features. With the great viz and bold structures, this was a fantastic dive.
We then loaded up some more divers and headed out to the recently found Cape Matapan. After a slight mishap with the shot line (thanks AF), we got the show on the road. Although the conditions were generally the same, the viz was about 10m at the bottom and there was quite a current running. This did not however stop the divers from investigating the lonely boiler and the remains of the vessel round around it. The current did however assist some of the divers in investigating areas far off the main wreck site and they reported wreckage for several hundred metres from the site. We will definitely have to return to investigate it some more. All in all a very cool dive and for some divers a first – having done two new wrecks on one day!
