OMSAC West Coast wreck weekend: 2 – 4 March 2012
This past weekend we supplied our boat to OMSAC for their 30th birthday celebrations commencing with a West Coast weekend away. During the preceding days the swell and wind had been nasty in that part of the coast, however Saturday morning at Jacobsbaai the sea was pretty flat and there was no wind. It looked like we would be getting wet and we soon got the boat in the water and sped out to the first dive site.
On arrival at Soldiers Reef the deceptive swell was larger than expected and the viz was less than expected. This meant the divers could not get close to the rocks (and wreck), however most enjoyed the varied marine life. The next dive was on the Haddon Hall and although the viz had improved (being a lot shallower), the swell had also increased. The divers did however get to explore the remains of the wreck and found it to be a very interesting dive. Our third launch was back to Soldiers Reef, where one buddy team shot some really nice footage and did almost an hour long dive....
Two dives were planned for Sunday, however we decided to launch from Sandy Point harbour and run out to the Haleric for the first launch. The swell was much larger than the day before, which saw some interesting skippering take place close to Maalkop Reef J The swell was much better around the wreck and soon the divers were kitted up and heading down the line. A few minutes later they all surfaced, with reports of really poor viz. This was particularly disappointing, as the Haleric is by far the best preserved wreck on the West Coast. For our second dive we decided to keep to a sheltered bay and did the MFV Castello Pellar. The viz was also not great, but two intrepid foreigners really revelled in it and had a great dive.
Although the conditions were not the greatest, fun was had by all both in and out the water. The chicken potjie on the Saturday night was also exceptionally good. The OMSAC divers are also keen poker players, although I suspect that there was a bit if cheating going on, especially when it came to the ‘forfeits’!!!
See Facebook for some of the photos :)
Congratulations to OMSAC in organising a good weekend away.
